ABOUT THE CLIENT
This case study is based on a real VNEXT project. The client's identity and certain project details have been anonymized or generalized for confidentiality purposes.
Our customer helps medical employers and job seekers find one another. Hospitals, clinics, and care providers are always looking for the right people, and skilled professionals are looking for the right place to work, but the two rarely meet by chance. A specialist matching service exists to make that meeting happen, and a website is where most of those introductions begin. Exact financials are withheld for confidentiality.
THE CHALLENGE
The customer knew the recruitment business deeply and knew the result it wanted: a matching site for the medical field, where employers and candidates could find each other. What was still open was how that should work on screen. Requirements were not yet fully defined, and as the product took shape, the customer refined its business rules, which meant that the specification moved as the project advanced.
One expectation was already firm. The customer wanted the site to be found on search engines, and it set a high bar for it. For a job matching site, search visibility is not a nice extra. It is how many candidates arrive, so every job page needs to be readable by a search engine and carry the right information about the role.
The site also needed to feel alive. Matching is a conversation, and a candidate who has just applied expects employers to reach them quickly, so messaging had to work in real time while the site stayed fast and the cost of running it stayed sensible.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
Our customer wanted a web based matching site for the medical field, one that search engines can read well, that lets employers and candidates talk to each other instantly, and that sends reliable email notifications, all built on a foundation that is efficient to run.
APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
Shaping the business rules together with the customer
Because the requirements were still being defined, our team did not simply wait for a specification. We took part in working out the business rules, asked the questions that the customer had not yet had reason to ask, and made suggestions for how a matching service should behave. When the customer changed its mind about a rule, our team supported the change, so the product moved with the customer's thinking rather than against it.
Choosing a rendering approach that serves search first
To meet the search expectation, our team built the site with server side rendering. Each page reaches the browser, and the search engine crawler, as complete content rather than as an empty shell that has to be assembled later. We paired it with careful page metadata for each job listing, so that every role is described to a search engine clearly and consistently.
Making the system fast and economical at the same time
On the backend, our team used Java's asynchronous mechanisms to raise performance, and we used services from Google and AWS to keep running costs reasonable while improving how the application performs. Email is sent through AWS managed mail, which gave the customer dependable delivery without a mail server to maintain.
Real time messaging that follows each user
For live conversations, our team used socket connections that identify each user's session, so that a message from an employer reaches the right candidate immediately, and an administrator can follow every conversation from a management screen.
TEAM SCALE
Our team for this engagement was small and close, with each person bringing a specific strength to the project.
- Backend developers: built the Java Spring application, one with particular strength in AWS environments and design
- Frontend developer: built the pages and brought a focus on search optimized job listings
- Bridge systems engineer: analyzed the business and put forward suggestions to the customer
- Tester: analyzed business requirements and verified the product against them, also contributing suggestions
THE SOLUTION AND TECHNOLOGY STACK
The result is a site where a job seeker can find a medical role on search, apply, and start a conversation with an employer, all in one place.
What was built
- Medical job matching: lets employers publish openings and candidates find and respond to them
- Search optimized job pages: render on the server with structured page metadata so that each listing can be read and understood by search engines
- Real time messaging: lets employers and candidates exchange messages instantly, with a management screen where administrators see each conversation and the system's own automatic notices
- Email notifications: keeps users informed through AWS managed email
- Cost and performance optimization: uses asynchronous processing and cloud services to keep the site responsive without unnecessary expense
Technology Stack
Layer | Technology / Platform Used |
Backend | Java 11, Spring |
Pages | Thymeleaf server side rendering, JavaScript |
Server | Ubuntu, Nginx |
Cloud | AWS, including managed email, and Google services |
Tools | Redmine for project tracking |
THE RESULTS
A matching site that people can find, and that lets them talk, from the first visit.
- Jobs that search engines can read: server side rendering and page level metadata give every listing a fair chance of being found by the candidates searching for it
- Conversations that begin immediately: real time messaging means a candidate's application can become a conversation within moments
- Visibility for administrators: a management screen lets the customer's staff follow conversations as they happen
- A site that is economical to run: asynchronous processing and managed cloud services keep performance high without a heavy operating cost
- A customer that is satisfied with both the product and our suggestions: the customer reported being happy with the finished site and with the guidance our team gave along the way
For a business that lives on introductions, a site that is easy to find and quick to respond puts every part of the hiring conversation within reach.
